Terrific Advice for Aspiring Writers/Authors

I had the pleasure of being interviewed by talented author Denise Turney on her hit literary radio show “Off the Shelf”.

This was one of the most professional interviews I’ve ever done, focusing mainly on the topic of my role as an author, writer and humanitarian.

Here I am sharing a lovely note that Denise sent to me after the show:

Hi Tina,

Thank you for a great interview! I enjoyed connecting with you today! I’d like to say THANK YOU! I appreciate your time! I appreciate you sharing your insight! I appreciate your candidness! I appreciate your tips and advice that you shared with Off The Shelf’s listeners! I appreciate YOU, Tina!

Thank you!

Denise Turney

Tina and Danny the Dragon Brighten Children’s Lives in Palm Harbor

I have a lovely message that I would like to share. To receive messages such as the one that follows is such a joy for me, and really does make the Danny the Dragon readings and presentations that I deliver that much more special.

A mother that attended a reading of my children’s book Danny the Dragon Meets Jimmy at the Palm Harbor Library in Pinellas County, FL, sent in the following message:

“I met you today at the Palm Harbor Library during your reading of Danny the Dragon. First off, I’d just like to tell you how much my children enjoyed the story – my older son, Donovan, immediately requested that we go on your website when we got home so he could see Danny again. I really enjoyed it as well – the kind and polite way the characters spoke to each other was refreshing. I really can’t tell you how much I appreciated that you complimented Donovan on his drawings after the story and told him that he’s an artist. He’s a bit of a perfectionist and gets down on himself if he doesn’t think what he’s done is up to his standards and there is only so much he believes when I tell him that I love something that he has done. Hearing it come from you really boosted his confidence and he made sure to tell his dad tonight that you thought he was good. We also saw some of your artwork on your website and he said “She’s the best artist in the whole world” so he definitely respects your opinion!

I signed up for your newsletter so I hope that that will include any information about other readings that you will be doing but, if not, please let me know if you will be presenting in any of the Pasco or Hillsborough County libraries. My mother works at the Palm Harbor Library and we attended with her but we actually live in Wesley Chapel and I know my kids would love to hear you read the story again.”

Tina Turbin to Announce her Cause at Pasadena City College Orchestra Concert

Sexson auditorium

John A. Sexson Auditorium – main performing arts venue on the campus of the Pasadena City College.

I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with the distinguished conductor of the Pasadena City College Orchestra.

On October 30th, as part of a very special “family” concert that the Orchestra will perform to an audience of 2,000, we will be releasing my Danny the Dragon DREAMS CD and the “Danny the Dragon Meets Jimmy” DVD (sign interpretation for the deaf), based off of my award-winning children’s book of the same name. The CD which also features the “Danny the Dragon Meets Jimmy” audiobook, is composed of beautiful classical music, and one of the classical pieces will be performed live for the first time ever at the concert.

Profits from the sales of the CD will be generously donated to the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University Medical Center, to support Dr. Peter Green’s research and efforts to raise celiac awareness.

Profits from the sales of the DVD will be donated to the Blossom’s Montessori School for the Deaf.

The concert promises to be a wonderful event. It is the Orchestra’s most sought-after and prestigious concert of the year. More details to come!

Tina’s Florida Cupcake Party – A Warm Thank you

Thank you card - 1

This is a lovely “thank you” card sent to me from a child that had attended one of my fun and exciting monthly Gluten-Free Cup Cake Parties, generously sponsored by Pamela’s Products and Nature’s Food Patch in Clearwater. (NOTE: for details on the Halloween Gluten-Free Cupcake party that we’re having 10/24/09, visit the Danny the Dragon blog)

And an equally lovely note from his mother. Enjoy!

Dear Tina,

Thank you so much for including us in your cupcake party Saturday! It was really cute, when we got home from your place, Bodhi (my 4-yr old, who you met at Spring Valley School) was actually reading Danny the Dragon! So Tristan picked up the book and got to the part where they are all eating dinner together, and he said, all matter-of-factly, “Danny the Dragon eats healthy.” I responded with, “yes, and his author, Tina Turbin, eats gluten-free!”, and just as matter-of-factly and straight-faced, he responded, ‘yes, true’. You could not have planned it better!

Then Sunday night I was telling Shane and Tristan that Monday was a holiday (their school started today, Tuesday), and that the four of us (Shane, Tristan, Bodhi and I) would have the day to play, so I asked them to think of some fun things to do on Monday. Shane got all bright-eyed and exclaimed, “I know, we can write Tina Turbin a card thanking her for Saturday!”. Oh Tina, just what every mom wants to hear, an un-prompted desire to write a thank you card! And that’s what fun thing he wanted to do on our day off! So I am enclosing that card – it looks like both boys drew you scenes of a Pokemon battle – quite an esteemed gift from their point of view!

It was wonderful to see you, and thank you again for including us. I went to a dinner party Saturday night and must have told about 15-20 people about it, and gluten, and did the same today when I returned to work, so I am defnitely spreading the word. Even Allen (my hubby) was telling people about it at his office yesterday, and he wasn’t even there!

Love,
Lael

Featuring Radio Host and Artist, Jordan Mercedes

Jordan Mercedes is an artist and radio show host whom I had the pleasure of being interviewed by just last week. It was one of the best interviews I have experienced and was a total delight. Jordan is very professional has found her purpose and has pursued it. I write a lot about the need for women to pursue their dreams, especially Life After Mom-Hood. While Jordan does not have children, she cares for and helps many people and is one woman who has found balance in her life. I admire her and as a result I am sharing a bit about her and her Art below, in her own words:

A Black Swan is something that is unexpected or highly improbable. That’s how art arrived in my life, as a black swan. I didn’t have a long time dream of becoming an artist. Like many others, when it comes to artistic expression, I would have said that I couldn’t draw a straight line. I’ve never had an art lesson. The art comes from a peaceful place in my heart. I started experimenting with glass as a way to unwind after my usual 12 hour work day in event marketing.

Soon, I had a house filled with brightly colored glass plates and bowls. When I had friends over, they offered to buy my work or would request a special item for a wedding gift or other celebration, which was a complete surprise to me! My first exhibit was a big success and resulted in a commission of twenty pieces of glass art by the local museum store. I’ve continued to grow as a glass artist and will always enjoy that medium.

I had another black swan experience when I had a dream about drawing and painting these beautiful, flowing ladies; I didn’t paint or draw before that dream. I began to draw these simple figures, all with the desire to express love, beauty, connection and the radiant heart of a woman. Sometimes the trials and concerns of life cause women to close in, hide their hearts and shut down, however, I know inside of each woman is a beautiful treasure. This art calls out to the treasure and the beauty.

That’s what I want to capture in the celebration ladies, the unhindered spirit of a woman. Long open arms, generous hearts and a reflection of peace. People often cry when they look at the simple paintings and drawings because they are touched in a deep place inside. I’m always humbled and blessed when that happens, when a heart is touched or inspired by my art.

At this time in my life I have the joy of living my creative passion and I’m taking it to the next level by working with women, helping them to tap into their own creative identity. Creative expression comes in many forms; sometimes it’s in the arranging of a delightful garden or a fun and vibrant patchwork quilt. Other times it’s more subtle, like the ability to write an endearing letter or card.

Creativity is a part of each person, however sometimes you have to look for clues to how it is expressed through your life. Your unique creativity always leaves clues and those clues are waiting to be discovered.

Through the art and my passion for radio, my mission remains the same, helping others to have their own black swan experiences that shift life to a new level of fulfillment, health, love, connection and freedom. I love being an artist…and I still can’t draw a straight line! www.JordanMercedes.com
