Dr. Andrew Wakefield, who published a study in 1998 about the possible link between autism and vaccines which was subsequently questioned and discredited by the medical community, has defended his work in an interview on CNN.
Dr. Wakefield’s work has been discredited over the past several years, and ten of the eleven doctors who were involved in the study have removed their names from it. The Sunday Times reports that Dr. Wakefield “changed and misreported results” in his research, according to “confidential” medical documents and interviews with witnesses.
Dr. Wakefield’s study was published in February 1998 in The Lancet medical journal, causing widespread concern among parents that the MMR vaccine—for measles, mumps, and rubella—was linked to autism. According to The Sunday Times, the impact of the article was “extraordinary,” with vaccination rates decreasing from 92% to less than 80%, while “herd immunity” from measles occurs when 95% of the population has been vaccinated.
After a British journalist, Brian Deer, published the results of his investigation calling Wakefield’s study an “elaborate fraud,” Wakefield denied these allegations as false in an interview on CNN with Anderson Cooper. Wakefield continues to stand by his findings, saying that the results have been replicated in studies in five other countries and that Deer has received financial support from a pharmaceutical company. Check out the link below to see the interview yourself.

In addition to my work as a children’s author, I am dedicated to bringing awareness to celiac disease, which is caused by an autoimmune reaction to gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye, leading to damage to the small intestine and a variety of serious physical and mental symptoms.
I had the honor and pleasure of delivering a teleseminar on celiac disease with Anne Holmes, the “Boomer-in-Chief” of the NABBW, National Association of Baby Boomer Women.
Follow the link below to have a listen or download the teleseminar as an MP3:

Now what? Studies show how important it is to have goals and show a direct link between writing your goals down and achieving success. Making goals comes easily to mothers, as they are impelled by the natural desire to help their children thrive. From getting the kids ready for school in the mornings to building their college funds, the objectives were clear and you clearly wanted them.
What would you like to do now? Come up with one or more goals, and you will have something to serve as a foundation for your hard work and dedication in this new life after mom-hood. You know you are strong and capable—you successfully raised a child, after all! It’s time to put that energy now toward something else, perhaps something you’ve always wanted to do since childhood. Whether it’s arts and crafts, volunteer work, or learning Chinese, it’s important to have something to work toward, whatever it is.
After mom-hood, I blossomed more than ever as a woman, launching a children’s book series, researching and illuminating important health issues such as celiac disease, and participating in humanitarian efforts such as improving children’s literacy. These are things that make me who I am, just as being a mother will always make up who I am. The satisfaction from meeting your own personal goals is a gift every mother deserves to give herself.

Having friends certainly makes you feel good. Now studies are showing that they may in fact be good for you! According to a recent Australian study, there’s evidence that friends may actually help your life last longer.
The study, which was conducted by the Centre for Ageing Studies at Flinders University, followed about 1500 older people for 10 years and found that those with a large network of friends were outliving those with the fewest friends by 22 percent. By contrast, close relationships with children and relatives had almost no effect on longevity. Lynne C. Giles, one of the researchers, emphasized that family ties are important; they just seem to have little effect on longevity.
So why is this? Good friends are there to discourage you from unhealthy behavior, such as excessive drinking and smoking, and to encourage a healthy lifestyle by supporting you in activities such as following a balanced diet and exercising. The companionship they offer is also important in fighting stress, depression, and low self-esteem, Their emotional support can back you up in taking healthy risks such as going back to school for a degree in a new field, opening a business, or having children, all of which can vastly improve the quality of life and thus decrease overall stress.

Vitamin D is becoming known now as the Super Vitamin, wowing researchers with its ability to prevent cancer and diabetes, as well as other health conditions such as heart disease, obesity, arthritis, high blood pressure, and autoimmune disorders. Vitamin D is actually part of the steroid family (including estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and cortisol). A recent study found that women who lived in areas without sunlight (exposure to sunlight produces Vitamin D) were nine times more likely to get breast cancer than women who live in sunnier spots!
Sixty percent of Americans are deficient in Vitamin D. Your doctor will be able to test you for a deficiency with a simple blood test. An optimum level is above 35 ng/mL. The daily recommended value is about 2,200 IU a day with some sun exposure of about fifteen to twenty minutes a day. Some researchers suggest as much as 5,000 IU every day during the winter when sunshine is at its lowest levels. If you choose to take it as a supplement, make sure you take D3, which is the same type of Vitamin D your body produces. Foods that are rich in Vitamin D are milk, cold-water fish, and egg yolk.

Who are you, after all? Many moms tend to identify themselves as—well—moms, of course. Twenty-four hours a day, that’s what you’ve been doing for the past couple of decades. A full-time job once meant nine-to-five to you, until you had children. Then you discovered the definition of full-time, or should I say all-the-time? Why wouldn’t you call yourself the post title of a job you hold all the time? As a supporter of women and mothers, I know how important it is to take on this identity as a mother and I applaud any woman who does this. However, it is also important to have your own identity apart from motherhood.
Perhaps you have a career aside from being a mom, or maybe you have a hobby or two, or you might think of yourself as a strong woman who likes to help others. It can be a whole activity you do on your own or a few adjectives that you use to describe yourself—you as yourself, not just as a mother. Not only does this help during your state of mom-hood, as you’ll find it easier to recharge on your own now and then with some personal time apart from the kids (kids don’t want Mom stressed out, trust me—they want you to enjoy yourself from time to time), but also I found that this helped me immensely after my children “left the nest.”
After mom-hood, I blossomed more than ever as a woman, launching a successful children’s book series, researching and illuminating important health issues such as gluten-free and celiac disease, and participating in humanitarian efforts such as improving children’s literacy. These are things that make me who I am, just as being a mother will always make up who I am. The satisfaction from meeting your own personal goals is a gift every mother deserves to give herself!

I am sharing a lovely acknowledgement from a mom-to-be, that wrote in to me.
Sara is a gluten-free employee at the wonderful company, Bio-K Intl. in Quebec.

SARA Gluten- Free Mom-To-Be
Though never officially diagnosed as Celiac, I discovered with my naturopath that I was wheat intolerant. After struggling to eliminate this staple from my diet (it took me more than a year to kick it completely!), I finally started to recover from the migraines, lethargy, chronic pain, fatigue, extra weight, and “brain fog” that had plagued me most of my life. I have now been wheat free for 5 years, and strive for a gluten free diet whenever possible.
Now, as an expectant mom-to-be with a new family (Spouse and stepson), feeling good and eating well are more important than ever. Resources like GlutenFreeHelp.info make living with a restricted diet much less overwhelming. A lot has changed in the 5 years since my diagnosis, and there’s more information and GF food available than ever before. This gives me great hope for my unborn daughter, as she is likely to inherit the same condition. Knowing that people like Tina are working hard to make the GF lifestyle attainable, stress free, and even enjoyable gives this pregnant lady one less thing to worry about.

Jordan Mercedes is an artist and radio show host whom I had the pleasure of being interviewed by just last week. It was one of the best interviews I have experienced and was a total delight. Jordan is very professional has found her purpose and has pursued it. I write a lot about the need for women to pursue their dreams, especially Life After Mom-Hood. While Jordan does not have children, she cares for and helps many people and is one woman who has found balance in her life. I admire her and as a result I am sharing a bit about her and her Art below, in her own words:

A Black Swan is something that is unexpected or highly improbable. That’s how art arrived in my life, as a black swan. I didn’t have a long time dream of becoming an artist. Like many others, when it comes to artistic expression, I would have said that I couldn’t draw a straight line. I’ve never had an art lesson. The art comes from a peaceful place in my heart. I started experimenting with glass as a way to unwind after my usual 12 hour work day in event marketing.
Soon, I had a house filled with brightly colored glass plates and bowls. When I had friends over, they offered to buy my work or would request a special item for a wedding gift or other celebration, which was a complete surprise to me! My first exhibit was a big success and resulted in a commission of twenty pieces of glass art by the local museum store. I’ve continued to grow as a glass artist and will always enjoy that medium.
I had another black swan experience when I had a dream about drawing and painting these beautiful, flowing ladies; I didn’t paint or draw before that dream. I began to draw these simple figures, all with the desire to express love, beauty, connection and the radiant heart of a woman. Sometimes the trials and concerns of life cause women to close in, hide their hearts and shut down, however, I know inside of each woman is a beautiful treasure. This art calls out to the treasure and the beauty.
That’s what I want to capture in the celebration ladies, the unhindered spirit of a woman. Long open arms, generous hearts and a reflection of peace. People often cry when they look at the simple paintings and drawings because they are touched in a deep place inside. I’m always humbled and blessed when that happens, when a heart is touched or inspired by my art.
At this time in my life I have the joy of living my creative passion and I’m taking it to the next level by working with women, helping them to tap into their own creative identity. Creative expression comes in many forms; sometimes it’s in the arranging of a delightful garden or a fun and vibrant patchwork quilt. Other times it’s more subtle, like the ability to write an endearing letter or card.
Creativity is a part of each person, however sometimes you have to look for clues to how it is expressed through your life. Your unique creativity always leaves clues and those clues are waiting to be discovered.
Through the art and my passion for radio, my mission remains the same, helping others to have their own black swan experiences that shift life to a new level of fulfillment, health, love, connection and freedom. I love being an artist…and I still can’t draw a straight line! www.JordanMercedes.com
Please visit me every 2nd Monday of the month at 12 noon, EST. Next show is November 9th, so mark your schedule and connect up. The topic of conversation is Gluten Free and Celiac Disease! http://www.blogtalkradio.com/Thrive-In-Balance
